In the past few weeks, the Turkish Prime Minister has very publicly criticized Israel, something that did not really happen previously. Ilan Bernstein
attributes this in large part to the Islamism of the AKP, the ruling party, and its attempt to wrest more power from the military. However, there is another, and possibly much more important, reason for Turkey to move away from Israel - its attempts to become a member of the EU. Perhaps in becoming "European", Turkey feels that it needs to become more aligned with the European view of Israel.
